So, while I’ve been working on the Codex marines for Rogue trader a few thoughts have been rattling around the ole think-melon…..
Iconic – yes
Meaty Looking – Ooh yes
Comic fodder? Yup – (Even if the author basically threw his dummy out the pram when GW turned round & said effectivly “We dont mind you using our IP, but yer not making money from it”)!
Useful, well-rounded additions to your force? – Well.. No, not in my opinion….
If anything sums up the martial image of the astartes legions it is these massive war machines. Heavily armed & armoured, able to carry elite squads of Terminators in its armoured belly, surely these represent the most fearsome (Non-superheavy) vehicle on the battlefields of the 41st Millenium.
I don’t think so. Personally, I think they are over-costed, under-utilised mule of a vehicle, neither transport nor tank.
Lets have a look at a few scenarios for marines:
Basically – marines deployed in a defensive formation & allow the enemy to come to them.
A Land Raider here sat being used, effectively as a pill-box for the las-cannon or the heavy bolters (I’m not going into the variants else we’d be here till doomsday).
Cons – Wasting transport capability, its own bulk masks half of its heavy guns.
A better option would be a predator imho – more versatile weapons wise, same front armour & cheaper too, points wise
Everyone running forward, into on ‘giving them the cold steel’ as we all know, “those Xeno’s don’t like it up ’em”
Well, of course, it’d be rude not to let the transports join in the fun & go screaming towards the opposing line to unleash the troops they carry
However, despite providing heavy armour for the troops inside (And a quick death if a decent AT round comes knocking) your loosing all the available firepower if you want to move at any rate faster than infantry walking rate!
And lets face it, Marines don’t have the numbers on the field to lose any firepower if you can avoid it.
Plus, given all the different, fast-moving options available to them – Rhino’s, Razorbacks, Jump packing assault units, motorbikes, Drop-pods, Deep-Strike… there are plenty of far more efficient ways to get the troops to where they want to be.
Example – Combined cost of Drop pod & Predator tank is cheaper than a Land-raider. similar effect in firepower & troop delivery, with change…
Thats why my Land Raiders have all stayed in the Foam for a long, long time….
